FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The  success of RNLI Cheltenham branch would not continue without the unstinting and generous help of Committee Members, and local supporters, for which the RNLI is extremely grateful. To fully maintain the RNLI Service in the UK and ROI costs in excess of £300000 per day. Our fund-raising occurs at regular events, from bucket collections at local supermarkets through to our Annual Lifeboat Ball held every February. The page headed 'Previous Events' will indicate the variety of events that we organise, or are invited to attend, every year. These events would not happen, and the funds  would not be collected in the Cheltenham area for the benefit of the RNLI , were it not for the unselfish, and traditional. efforts of all those involved locally.

Unfortunately none of us are getting any younger, and people are living fuller and busier lives. But, there is an urgent need for more volunteers to come forward, either to join our fund-raising committee, or to give up some time to assist at our events. You may be recently retired, or have time on your hands or may be interested in boating, or you may simply want to get involved in a very worthwhile cause. If so, and particularly if you are a member of the younger community, please give serious consideration to becoming one of the thousands of local volunteers who assist all year round in ensuring that the meritorious and essential service that the RNLI undertakes - saving lives at sea AND on inland waters - continues to be fully funded.

INTERESTED?

PLEASE RING: FAY HARVEY, MBE, HONORARY SECRETARY, ON 01242 261330

PS: WE ARE PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO REPORT THAT TWO NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS HAVE NOW JOINED US, AND WE ISSUE A WARM WELCOME TO LIZ GILES AND ANTHONY MASON.

We are pleased to announce that Alan Tyson (pictured above),  has now joined the Cheltenham Branch Committee.   Alan, assisted by his wife Hazel, wrote a co-produced  play on the history of the RNLI entitled 'OUT OF THE MIST', and this was very successfully premiered at Cranham Village Hall last autumn. Net proceeds of the event amounted to over £4200, all of which was credited to the RNLI. Alan is very anxious for the RNLI to benefit still further by arranging other  performances of the play, and is currently consulting with  theatres and drama groups, both local and farther afield,  in order to expand interest in the project. If any supporter knows of any likely interest in promoting further productions locally, or elsewhere, would they please contact Alan, who will provide further details. Alan may be contacted at tyson679@btinternet.com

Interest in future productions of the play has now been forthcoming from a number of Theatre and Production Groups locally and around the UK, stimulated by local approaches and an excellent article in the Autumn edition of the LIFEBOAT Magazine. The second production of the play was presented by the Mayhill Players at Mayhill Village Hall, Huntley, Gloucestershire from September 29 to October 2 2011, directed enthusiastically and sympathetically by Pat Ratcliffe.

STOP PRESS: THE ABOVE EVENT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, PRODUCING OVER £1000 NET IN FUNDS FOR THE RNLI - IF YOU MISSED IT, PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF OUR NEXT PERFORMANCES OF THE PLAY AT THE AWARD-WINNING PARABOLA ARTS CENTRE, CHELTENHAM, ON MARCH  29 AND 30 2012.   PRODUCED BY JENNY WICKS OF JENNY WREN PRODUCTIONS, WHO ARE WELL KNOWN ON THE  CHELTENHAM THEATRE SCENE, AND FOR RECENT TOURING PRODUCTIONS, IT PROMISES TO BE ANOTHER OUTSTANDING EVENT.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE PARABOLA ARTS CENTRE'S PRESENTATION OF THE RNLI PLAY 'OUT OF THE MIST', PLEASE CONTACT FAY HARVEY ON 01242 261330 OR ALAN TYSON ON 07764 235515.

GOOD AND BAD NEWS

Avril Dooley, the Branch Souvenir Secretary, was in the news recently for the excellent financial support she afforded the RNLI in relation to an initiative undertaken by the Trefoil Group of the Girl Guides Association. As Chair of the South West Trefoil Group, Avril personally organised various collections in the region, which were undertaken by Trefoil Group members specifically for the benefit of RNLI Lifeguards. A fantastic total of £ 4418  has so far been raised, with more money yet to come. This has been a very generous and unselfish undertaking by Avril and the Trefoil Group at large, and an extremely good example of the co-operation that is possible between volunteer organisations generally. Pictured below is Avril (right front) presenting the cheque to Exmouth Lifeguards in July this year.

VERY UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE LOSING THE EXPERTISE AND COMMITMENT OF AVRIL ON OUR COMMITTEE, AS SHE IS MOVING HER HOME TO SCOTLAND. THIS MEANS THAT WE ARE NEED OF A COMMITTEE MEMBER TO TAKE ON THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF SOUVENIR SECRETARY.

THE POSITION WOULD SUIT SOMEONE WHO IS HAPPY TO BECOME A LIFEBOAT FUND-RAISING VOLUNTEER, AND, POSSIBLY BUT NOT ESSENTIALLY, HAS RETAIL TRADE EXPERIENCE TOGETHER WITH THE NECESSARY TIME AND COMMITMENT TO ENABLE HIM/HER TO ORDER, CO-ORDINATE, AND ARRANGE THE SALE OF LIFEBOAT CHRISTMAS CARDS, DIARIES, CALENDERS AND CHILDRENS' TOYS IN AND AROUND THE CHELTENHAM AREA.

IF INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT FAY ON 01242 261330, OR JOHN ON 01452 813848, OR ANY CHELTENHAM BRANCH COMMITTEE MEMBER.

IN JANUARY 2010 WE WERE DELIGHTED TO RECEIVE THE WONDERFUL NEWS THAT OUR HONORARY SECRETARY, FAITH (FAY) HARVEY, WAS  AWARDED THE MBE IN THE 2010 NEW YEAR'S HONOURS LIST. THIS IS A VERY DESERVING HONOUR FOR FAY, WHO HAS BEEN RAISING FUNDS FOR THE RNLI FOR AT LEAST 37 YEARS.

Fay was invested with her award by HM The Queen at Windsor Castle

on 7 May 2010

WE OFFER FAY OUR HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS
