NEWS

We are pleased to announce that Alan Tyson, and his wife Hazel, have become Committee Members. Alan, assisted by Hazel, wrote a co-produced  play on the history of the RNLI entitled 'OUT OF THE MIST', and this was very successfully premiered at Cranham Village Hall last autumn. Net proceeds of the event amounted to over £4200, all of which was credited to the RNLI. Alan is very anxious for the RNLI to benefit still further by arranging other local performances of the play, and is currently consulting with local theatres and drama groups in order to expand interest in the project. If any supporter knows of any likely interest in promoting further productions locally, or further afield, would they please contact Alan, who will provide futher details. Alan may be contacted at tyson679@btinternet.com

John Couch

  Branch Chairman

NEWS

At the Annual general Meeting of Cheltenham Branch RNLI, held at the Civil Service Club, Cheltenham on November 4 2009, Mr. Frank Austin, who had been Chairman for over 22 years, announced his intention to retire from the position. His successor is Mr. John Couch, previously Vice Chairman since 2001. The newly appointed Vice Chairman is Mr. Robert Lyndsey. Mr. Austin will continue to support the RNLI in his time-honoured fashion by remaining a Committee Member, and will continue with his regular presentation of talks on the work of the RNLI, and other subjects. At the AGM, Mr. Austin was presented with an RNLI Certificate of thanks on vellum for his outstanding period of service to the Institution. He is pictured (centre, below) with the Branch president,  Ex-Mayor of Cheltenham Councillor Lloyd Surgenor, and the incoming Branch Chairman, Mr. John Couch.

The Committee  was very pleased to announce earlier in 2009 that the Institution's Council had made the Award of a Gold Badge to our then Branch Chairman, Mr. Frank Austin. This was in recognition of the  hard work put in by Frank, and the remainder of the Committee, during a very busy and successful period which resulted in  record fund-raising sums being achieved.  Frank is very well-known in Lifeboat circles, and has been  involved in local fund-raising activity and management for  many years. The  Award was presented to Frank at the Annual RNLI Awards Ceremony held at the Barbican Centre, London on May 14 2009.
